Char Dham Yatra 2025

The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, undertaken by thousands of devotees each year. Situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the four revered shrines—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath—hold immense religious significance for Hindus. The journey to these sacred sites is believed to cleanse the soul of all sins and lead to salvation (Moksha).

 

For 2025, the Char Dham Yatra is set to commence with the opening of the temples in April and May. The pilgrimage requires careful planning regarding registration, transportation, accommodations, and weather conditions.

Char Dham Yatra Opening Dates for 2025

 1. Yamunotri Dham (Source of the Yamuna River)


Opening Date: April 30, 2025
Location: Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand (3,293 meters above sea level)
Dedicated to: Goddess Yamuna, the sister of Yama (God of Death)


Key Attractions:

  • Yamunotri Temple: Built by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal

  • Surya Kund: A hot water spring where devotees cook rice and potatoes as prasad

  • Divya Shila: A sacred rock near the temple, worshipped before entering the temple

  • Trekking Route: 6 km trek from Janki Chatti


2. Gangotri Dham (Source of the Ganges River)


Opening Date: April 30, 2025
Location: Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand (3,100 meters above sea level)
Dedicated to: Goddess Ganga, the holiest river in Hinduism


Key Attractions:

  • Gangotri Temple: Built in the 18th century by Amar Singh Thapa

  • Gaumukh Glacier: The actual source of the Ganges, accessible via a 19 km trek

  • Bhagirath Shila: The sacred stone where King Bhagirath meditated to bring Ganga to earth

 

3. Kedarnath Dham (One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva)


Opening Date: May 2, 2025, at 7:00 AM
Location: Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand (3,583 meters above sea level)
Dedicated to: Lord Shiva (Jyotirlinga)


Key Attractions:

  • Kedarnath Temple: Built by the Pandavas and revived by Adi Shankaracharya

  • Bhairavnath Temple: Protects Kedarnath during winter

  • Chorabari Tal (Gandhi Sarovar): A serene glacial lake

  • Trekking Route: 16 km trek from Gaurikund (or via helicopter from Phata)


4. Badrinath Dham (One of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu)


Opening Date: May 4, 2025
Location: Chamoli district, Uttarakhand (3,133 meters above sea level)
Dedicated to: Lord Vishnu (Badri Narayan)


Key Attractions:

  • Badrinath Temple: Built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century

  • Tapt Kund: A natural hot spring for bathing before darshan

  • Mana Village: The last Indian village before the Tibet border

  • Charan Paduka: A rock with footprints believed to be of Lord Vishnu

Char Dham Yatra Packages 2025

  • Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri, and Gangotri have been called the most sacred pilgrimage sites in Hinduism.

  • Yamunotri is the first stop of the Char Dham Yatra located in Uttarkashi district in the western direction of the Garhwal Himalayas.

  • On the religious basis of visiting Char Dham in one trip, first Yamunotri, then Gangotri, then Kedarnath and finally Badrinath are visited.

Walking The Himalayas Char Dham Yatra Packages:

Deluxe Char Dham Yatra Package

Walking The Himalayas provides you with deluxe Char Dham Packages that include transportation by AC bus/Tempo Traveller or Car. In this package, you will have accommodation in deluxe hotels, all meals, and sightseeing. The package usually takes 10-12 days and costs around INR 35,000-45,000 per person.

Budget Char Dham Yatra Package

This package is for those who want to undertake the yatra at a lower cost. It includes transportation by non-AC bus/Tempo Traveller or Car, accommodation in budget hotels, all meals, and sightseeing. The package usually takes 10-12 days and costs around INR 20,000-25,000 per person.

Helicopter Char Dham Yatra Package

This package is for those who want to avoid arduous trekking and long travel times. It includes transportation by helicopter, accommodation in deluxe hotels, all meals, and sightseeing. The package usually takes 4-5 days and costs around INR 1,70,000-2,00,000 per person.

You can upgrade the package to Luxury by adding Rs 8500 per person and to Premium by adding Rs 15000 per person to the above cost. The hotel/resort stay will be upgraded accordingly. 

Helicopter Char Dham Yatra Package: This package is for those who want to avoid arduous trekking and long travel times. It includes transportation by helicopter, accommodation in deluxe hotels, all meals, and sightseeing. The package usually takes 4-5 days and costs around INR 1,70,000-2,00,000 per person.

Day 1: Haridwar to Barkot (5-6 hours/ Drive: 180 km)

Today you will drive towards Barkot via Mussoorie, En-route visit Mussoorie and Kempty Fall (You can have your lunch here since you will not find any good restaurants before Badkot). After having your lunch you can continue your journey straight to Barkot. After reaching Barkot you will go to your Hotel. Take a rest and get yourself energized for the next day.

 

Overnight stay at Barkot.

 

Drive:  180 km / 5-6 hr

Altitude: 1352 m

Day 2: Barkot to Yamutori Dham to Barkot  (36kms drive & 6kms Trek)

 

Yamunotri is said to be the first step of Chardham Yatra. There is a beautiful temple of the Yamuna built in the hill style and there is a source of boiling water near the temple, which is the centre of attraction for the pilgrims.

Altitude: 3291 m

Day 3: Barkot to Uttarkashi (100 km drive / 3-4 Hr)

Today you will start your day after having breakfast and then drive to Uttarkashi. After reaching Uttarkashi you will directly Check into the hotel. You can relax or visit nearby places like  Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Uttarkashi.

Overnight stay at Uttarkashi.

Drive: 100 km and 3-4 hours

Stay: Hotel/ Homestay
Altitude: 1352 m

Day 4: Uttarkashi to Gangotri to Uttarkashi (100 km / 3-4 hours each side)


Gangotri is the second stop of Chardham Yatra. Pilgrims after visiting Yamunotri reach Gangotri to worship Mata Ganga. The natural source of the Ganges is the Gomukh Glacier at a distance of 18 km from Gangotri. The distance from Yamunotri to Gangotri by road is 219 km while the distance from Rishikesh to Gangotri is 265 km and can be reached directly by vehicle from there.
 

Drive: 100 km / 3-4 hours

Stay: Hotel/Homestay
Altitude: 3048 m

Day 5: Uttarkashi to Guptkashi/Sonprayag  (220 km/ 8-9 hours)

Today after having your early morning breakfast you will start your drive towards Guptkashi/Sonprayad via Moolgarh & Lambgoan. On the way, you will pass by a beautiful river Mandakini at Tilwara. The holy river Mandakini river comes from the Kedarnath side and you will drive alongside the holy Mandakini to reach Guptakashi. After reaching Guptkashi you can visit Ardh Narishwar Temple.

 

Overnight stay at Guptakashi/Sonprayag.

Day 6: Guptkashi/Sonprayag to Kedarnath ( 30 km drive/ 19 km trek) ​

After having your delicious morning breakfast you will depart for Kedarnath Dham. On the way, you will pass by Ramban. Reach Kedarnath and have your darshan there. You can enjoy the nearby places like the cave and the beautiful Kedar Ghati. 

Overnight stay at Kedarnath.

Drive & Trek: 30 km drive and 19 km trek

Stay: Homestay/ Hotel

Altitude: 3583 m

Day 7: Kedarnath Dham to Guptkashi ( 19 km Trek and 30 km drive / 3-4 hrs trek and 1 hr drive) ​

Early in the morning you can attend the Arti and have your breakfast. After that, you can check out of the Kedarnath Hotel and start your journey back to Sonprayag. Team Walking The Himalaya's driver will be there waiting to receive you all at a designated place. 

After boarding the vehicle, our driver will take you all to Hotel in Guptkashi. 

Trek & Drive: 19 km and 30 km driving

Stay: Homestay/ Hotel

Altitude: 1319 m

Day 8: Guptkashi to Badrinath ( 196 km drive/ 6 hours) ​

After having your morning breakfast you will board your vehicle and continue your journey toward Badrinath. Since the road goes till Badrinath Dham you don't need to worry about walking on foot. Reach the temple campus and had a bath in Taptkund. Badrinath is also known as Baikunth Dham.

Day 9: Badrinath to Haridwar ( 240 km drive/ 5-6 hours) ​

 

Have your early morning breakfast or you can do the darshan first if you want. Board your vehicle as today you will cover a long distance of 300 km to Haridwar. 

Drive: 312  km

Stay: Homestay/ Hotel

Altitude: 3583 m
